Poor Pug Frodo came to visit us because he had been straining and been unable to urinate, the medical name for this is dysuria. Frodo was given a full examination by our amazing Senior Veterinary Surgeon Greg and because he was unable to pass urine by himself a urinary catheter was placed while under sedation. This is passed through the urethra (a tube that transports urine from the bladder to outside the body) after placement the urine could be removed to help relieve pressure from poor Frodo’s bladder.
The bladder and urethra were then flushed and x-rays taken including double contrast study. A special contrast material is used which outlines any stones present and reveal the wall of the bladder clearly, luckily lovely Frodo’s x-rays were clear.
If your pet is unable to urinate this can be an emergency continued lack of urination can cause bladder rupture and make then very ill.
If your pet shows any of these symptoms we would like to see them.
- Frequent attempts to urinate but non passed.
- Straining to urinate
- Small amounts passed or dribbling.
- Accidents in the home.
- Your pet may seen irritable or in pain.
- Licking at their genitals
- Urine may contain blood or maybe discoloured.
- Your pet may cry out or be vocal on urination.
