All About Dogs – In Honour of International Dog Day

Amazing Facts About Dogs

Did you know that…

  1. It is rumored that the Beatles song ‘A Day in the Life’ has a frequency only dogs can hear – How cool is that?
  2. Dogs’ noses secrete a thin layer of mucous that helps them absorb scent. They then lick their noses to sample the scent through their mouth.
  3. Three dogs survived the Titanic sinking – 2 Pomeranians and 1 Pekingese rescued from the ship.
  4. The Chow Chow is one of the two dog breeds (Shar-pei is the other one) that have fully black tongues. But, did you know that Chow chows are actually born with pink tongues and they turn blue-black at 8-10 weeks of age?
  5. The Ewoks in Star Wars were based on a dog. More specifically, they were based on George Lucas’ family dog – Amazing fact for all the Star Wars fans, right?
  6. The ancestors of humans and dogs met in Eurasia, with the first undisputed dog, Bonn-Oberkassel, found buried beside humans 14,200 years ago – We were meant for each other!

A Brave Pooch

This giant handsome man is Kyto. His owners had brought him in as he was vomiting, passing diarrhoea and wasn’t feeling himself🥺.

After some tests were run it was discovered Kyto had pancreatitis. He was hospitalised for some supportive treatment including pain relief as pancreatitis is a very painful condition.l🏨.

After lots of TLC and medication he was feeling so much better and giving lots of kisses especially to our vet Mary Louise❤️.

If you are worried about your pet feeling unwell please call us and one of our team can help advise you on the next steps.

Mango’s Lifesaving Surgery

Meet the very handsome Mango 😍 He has been with us this week for a BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) procedure.

As a brachycephalic breed (flat-nosed), Mango was born with certain anatomical features that made breathing difficult for him 😥 This included very narrow nostrils, a very long soft-palate which could block his trachea (wind pipe), and everted laryngeal saccules (small lumps in the back of the throat, that may become ‘everted’ and reduce the space available for air to pass)

Following a BOAS assessment with our fab surgeon, Gabriella, she recommended surgery to correct these issues. The surgery went well and you can see the difference in the size of his nostrils in the photos! Hopefully he feels a lot more comfortable in himself from now on, especially in the hot weather!! 🥵

Mango has been a very popular boy in practice this week, and has been demanding lots of cuddles from our nurses, who were more than happy to oblige 🥰 we all wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to more cuddles and tail wags at his check ups!

☎️ If you are worried about your brachycephalic furbaby, call Streatham Hill Vets or Briar House Vets to arrange a BOAS assessment with our skilled vets!

Grass Seed Alert

Cute little Meeko visited us with a swelling on her paw. After careful examination our amazing vet Jenny discovered it’s a grass seed stuck in the front left paw.

Meeko spent a day with us and now is grass seed free! 😊

There is a bandage on the affected paw and once it’s gone lovely Meeko will hopefully forget about her misadventure!
